How to Pack Fragile Items So Nothing Breaks

Packing Tips

Dishes, glassware, artwork, and electronics — here's the professional packer's method for protecting everything that matters.

1

The Golden Rule: More Padding Than You Think

Professional packers use far more cushioning than most people expect. Every fragile item should be individually wrapped, then surrounded by at least two inches of padding on all sides. Crumpled packing paper, bubble wrap, and foam peanuts all work — the key is filling every void in the box so nothing shifts in transit.

2

Dishes and Plates

Pack plates vertically, like records in a crate — never flat. Flat stacking concentrates weight on the bottom plate and causes breakage. Wrap each plate individually in packing paper, then bundle three or four together. Use cell dividers inside the box for extra protection.

3

Glasses and Stemware

Stuff the inside of each glass with crumpled paper before wrapping the outside. This prevents the glass from collapsing inward under pressure. Wrap each piece individually, then wrap pairs together. Mark the box FRAGILE on all four sides and the top.

4

Electronics and Screens

Original boxes are best for electronics — save them if you can. If not, wrap screens in anti-static bubble wrap (never regular plastic wrap, which can cause static damage). Coil cables and tape them to their device. Remove batteries from remotes and small devices.

5

Artwork and Mirrors

Use mirror boxes or picture boxes sized to fit. Apply painter's tape in an X across glass surfaces to hold shards if breakage occurs. Wrap in moving blankets and mark FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP. Never lay artwork flat in a truck — always store it vertically.
